About the pictures ...
Most of the pictures on this website have been taken with a Fujifilm S7000. I switched to the Fujifilm from an analogue SLR, a Canon EOS IX7 in 2004. It was a huge difference taking pictures with a digital camera. Initially I wasn't too impressed, as it felt so unfamiliar, especially the shutter delay, but after a few months we became friends and I got to know her. Of course there are advantages and disadvantages. One advantage, me as the most impatient person on this planet appreciates, is the ability to view a photo instantly as soon as it's been saved on the camera's hard drive. In December 2008 I upgraded to a Canon EOS 50D.

I take my photos in RAW format and develop them in Adobe Photoshop's built in RAW converter. Most of my black and white images have been taken in colour and later been converted into black and white, using Photoshop.

Currently only photos taken with one of my digital cameras (apart from a few exceptions) are displayed on this site. The film photos taken with my Canon are all stored in shoe boxes and hidden in my wardrobe. What a shame... When I have time, and I mean lots of time, I will get a selection of my favourites scanned professionally. If anyone knows of a good and tested company that offers that service in the UK I would like to hear about it.

About me ...
My name is Dorit Fuhg and I'm originally from Lauter in Saxony, Germany. After living and working in Switzerland for 3 years and in Norway for a summer season, I came to Bournemouth, UK in 2001. What was meant to be a half year stay to learn English, turned into some sort of permanent residency. Well, plans don't always work out and living in Bournemouth is not too bad after all.

I now live in Southbourne, a lovely district of Bournemouth and work as a commercial property property database administrator.

Currently I'm studying part time towards a CIW - Certified Internet Webmaster certification with NITLC (the National IT Learning Centre). I have already completed several modules and hold diplomas for "Advanced Database Design" and "Global Communications/ Web Design". In order to pass the Web Design module I had to demonstrate that I'm able to use HTML and CSS effectively to build a website by hand coding only. The completed website can be viewed here: www.feinschmeckerschule.de. I thoroughly enjoyed the process of planning, designing, coding and publishing the website, so I decided to build one for myself, which is the one you are on right now.

Recently I have built two more websites which I'm proud to be able to add to my professional web design portfolio. epcsouth.com and onceuponatease.com.
I will also soon be launching my freelance webdesign site, designgrove.com.

Currently I'm learning ASP.NET in C#; the last module to complete before I can finish the course and gain my qualification as Internet Solutions Developer. As the final project work I will be building an e-commerce website. Looking forward to that, though it's still a way to go until my technical skills allow be to tackle that project.

Of course my live is not all about working and studying... even though sometimes if feels like that. Whenever I have a minute I either go out to take pictures. For me that's just the best way to relax. When taking a picture and focusing on the subject I can forget everything else around me...
About this site ...
The main reason for building this website was to practice my newly learned HTML and CSS skills. Above all I wanted to tackle the challenge of building a website that adapts to different screen sizes, hence the "liquid" layout. If you don't know what I mean, resize your browser window. You'll see that the actual main content width adapts to the browser width.
Some features on this site, like the flash picture galleries, have been built by very clever coders, who put there codes and scripts on the web for others to use. Many thanks to you all.

Secondly, my hobby and passion is photography and over the years I took a large amount of pictures, and all they do is "gathering dust" on my hard disk drive. I thought it'd be a shame not to do anything with them. So here they are.

Thirdly, it gives my friends and family the option to see what I've been up to without having to send my latest photos by post or email.

You might wonder why I named the website "a picture a day". Well, when I bought the domain name in 2006 it sounded like a good idea to take one picture every day but soon I realized it's not going to happen. It started out alright until one day I just couldn't find the time to take and post a picture, so the next day it had to be two pictures, which took me all evening... I now stoped putting myself under the pressure of having to take a picture a day - I have too many other things to get on with. Though I will keep the name of the website for now.
